As The Pandemic Surges, There Are Many Unknowns That Lie Ahead

COVID’s Drastic Impact on Window Manufacturers Lead Times

Builders and remodeling companies are faced with widespread delays and backorders of building materials. Across the industry, contractors big and small including giants like Lowes have experienced extended lead times from their suppliers.

Because of delays in glass and vinyl extrusions, window manufacturers have definitely been affected.  For windows as an example, PPG provides window glass to the majority of manufacturers.  When even one part of the supply chain such as the glass is held up, the whole distribution channel is affected.

Window suppliers are also facing record-level customer demand due to customers investing in their homes instead of traveling.  All of these factors are putting a big strain on our industry… which affects when you see them looking great in your home.

In response to the coronavirus outbreak, the home remodeling industry has been tasked with changing the way we operate to ensure the safety and health of employees and customers. Wonder Windows took a proactive approach to strengthen much of our supply chain and operational backup systems in May. Widespread labor shortages and interruptions in production though, will likely take time to fully evolve.

As of Fall 2020, home remodelers across the industry are finding that average lead times for window products is about 16 weeks from the time they receive the order.  We are a major buyer and have been trying to leverage that to 12 weeks as best as possible.  We are frustrated because their delays negate the good faith promises we have made to our customers.  Know that we want to install your new windows just as badly as you want them installed!

Taking all of this into consideration, consumers should plan ahead and evaluate the impact that these delays will have on their home project. Instead of waiting until a home project might become an urgent requirement, make a strategic plan to ensure that your comfort and safety is not affected by COVID shortages.

Now is still a great time to buy before prices increase in 2021.  Call, text, or e-mail us today for more information.
